Book Reviews and Beyond
Critical Authority, Cultural Industry, and Society in Periodicals Between the 18th and the 21st Century
edited by Dario Boemia and Stefano Locati
The review form started to develop along with periodicals in the seventeenth century. With its unoriginal writings, compromised opinions, flawed judgments, poorly thought-out evaluations, biased comments, it might be considered a humble form of criticism and, as such, it has proved to be one of the minor genres of the literary system. Nonetheless the central role it has played in the literary framework for more than three centuries testifies to its attractiveness. This book aims at presenting the evolution of the review form from the eighteenth century to the present. It collects the proceedings of what may be considered the first international conference on the review form, “Book Reviews and Beyond”, held at IULM University on 3-5 June 2020. The papers collected highlight the interdisciplinary perspective, ranging from literature to cinema, music, and television.
